Stacked images of a cultured neonatal cardiomyocyte, showing the nucleus (blue) and the pattern of the many contractile proteins (myofibrils, green) contained within the cell. These proteins shorten under certain stimuli, causing the muscle cells and therefore the muscle to contract. Magnification: x600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
