Caption: Common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The antennae are seen on the top of the head, between the two large compound eyes. The mouthparts include the mandibles (used to cut up food), the tongue (below mandibles, red) and the maxillary palps (either side of head), used to manipulate food. Magnification: x6.5 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
