Caption: Blood platelets. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through blood platelets, showing their internal structure. Platelets are cell fragments whose function is the maintenance of haemostasis (prevention of bleeding), which is mainly achieved through the formation of blood clots. They have no nucleus or DNA but contain many granules (pink circles) containing the substances used for blood clot formation, such as fibrinogen and coagulation factors. When bleeding occurs, platelets clump together (clot), using fibrinogen as a binding agent, to block the escape of blood. Magnification: x10,000 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
