Caption: Stoat (Mustela erminea). Stoats are carnivorous mammals found throughout the northern regions of the world. In summer months stoats are brown and beige, as shown. However, they develop a white colouration in winter to help camouflage them amongst snow and ice. Stoats are primarily nocturnal, but are sometimes seen during the day. They hunt other small mammals, birds and fish. When threatened they can release a foul-smelling chemical from glands at the base of the tail. Stoats may reach a length of up to 25 centimetres. Photographed in Surrey, England, UK, in April.
