Caption: Caterpillar skin, light micrograph. This section of the skin shows two prolegs (large round circles) which have hooked hairs on the periphery to grip the surface. The skin is also covered in small hairs or setae (black), and raised circular structures called tubercles and verrucae. Parts of the respiratory system can be seen through the skin, with a breathing pore or spiracle, at left (oval circle). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
