Caption: Gnat (Culex pipiens), light micrograph. The gnat's body has three major parts: the abdomen, thorax and head. The abdomen is at upper centre. Attached to the thorax are a pair of wings (upper right), a pair of halteres (balancers) and three pairs of legs (lower frame). The head (centre right) includes a pair of compound eyes, a pair of antennae, a pair of maxillary palps and the proboscis. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
