Caption: Particle physics experiment. Researcher preparing an experiment involving a cryogenic electron beam ionizer (KRION) at the high-energy laboratory of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Moscow region, Russia. There have been several generation of KRION devices, all using cryogenic (low-temperature) technology. An electron beam ionizer uses beams of electrons to ionise materials to produce beams of particles for use in particle physics experiments. The end product can be electrons, protons or heavy ions. The KRION devices were designed as small-scale experiments in laboratories. Photographed on 25 January 2005.
