Caption: 1748 solar eclipse. Historical artwork entitled 'The Geography of the Great Solar Eclipse of July 14 MDCCXLVIII', showing the path of the shadow of totality of the eclipse. A map of the world as it was known then is shown (centre), with the path of the eclipse's shadow marked on it (grey band). Around the edges are a number of diagrams showing what the sun would have looked like at specific times, in various cities around the world.
