Caption: Dogfish head. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the head of a lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), in the region of the olfactory organs. The upper 'lip' of the dogfish has grooves either side of the mid-line (bottom left and bottom right) and each of these leads to a blind cavity (lower left and lower right). The cavities contain numerous folds (increasing the surface area) covered with epithelium containing sensory cells sensitive to chemicals (perceived in the brain as smell). Above are the two olfactory lobes of the brain (upper centre) enclosed by cartilage. The bubble-like areas under the skin are the ampullae opening to the surface and connected with balance and pressure differences. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
