Caption: Kidney. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a kidney, showing the outer region (cortex, round the edges) and the inner region (medulla, centre). The kidney's cortex is the site of most of the filtering units (renal corpuscles). The kidney filters waste products from the blood and excretes them as urine through the renal pelvis (white space) and then to the ureter (pink area at the top of the pelvis, upper centre). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
