Caption: Skin tissue. Light micrograph of a transverse section through human skin. The skin is made up of an outer epidermis (pale purple, across top) with hair follicles (deep purple). These produce hair from a bulbous root (below epidermis). The hairs have an erector muscle and sebaceous glands around this base. Sweat glands (pink) are found lower down in the next skin layer, the dermis. The dermis consists of collagen and elastic fibres and a fat layer at its base. Blood vessels in the dermis form capillary loops under the epidermis. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
