Caption: Alec John Jeffreys (born 1950), British geneticist, in his laboratory with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) autoradiograms on a lightbox. In the 1980s, Jeffreys developed the technique of DNA fingerprinting, which is now used worldwide in criminal investigations and to resolve paternity disputes. Jeffreys, who is professor of genetics at the University of Leicester, England, has received numerous awards for his work. He was knighted in 1994 for services to science and technology. Photographed in 1989.
