Caption: Joe Farman (1930-2013), British geophysicist. Farman was part of the team that discovered the ozone hole over Antarctica in 1984. The ozone hole is a depletion of ozone in the stratosphere in the polar regions. This stratospheric ozone protects the Earth from ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. Farman and his colleagues discovered the decrease in ozone using ground-based instruments, and their results were later confirmed by satellite measurements. Photographed in 1989, at the British Antarctic Survey headquarters, Cambridge, England.
