Caption: Michael Rutter (born 1933), British psychiatrist, with one of his diagnostic tools. Rutter was the first consultant in child psychiatry in the UK, and helped to establish the field as a medical speciality. He has worked in a wide range of areas, including autism and child development. In a 1972 book, Rutter assessed the maternal deprivation theory proposed by Bowlby in 1951, and refined and corrected it to include the effects of social deprivation and family discord. Rutter was knighted in 1992 for his work in child psychiatry. Photographed in 1989.
