Doll was a pioneer of studies linking smoking to health problems, publishing a report in 1950 that showed that the risk of lung cancer was up to 50 times greater among heavy smokers compared to non-smokers. Doll, one of the leading epidemiologists of the 20th century, also investigated causes of leukaemia, asbestos and breast cancer. He received numerous awards for his work, and was knighted in 1971. Photographed in 1989.
