Caption: Bacteriophage DNA packaging motor, molecular model. Bacteriophages are viruses that only infect bacteria. They enter the host cell (a bacterium) and manipulate the cell's machinery to produce all the necessary components for new virus particles, including genetic material (DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid). The motor, seen here from three different angles, is positioned at the entrance (base) of the empty virus capsid (protein shell of a virus). Its job is to aid assembly of the new viruses by feeding viral DNA into the empty capsids.
