Caption: Termites (Nasutitermes corniger). Worker termites (larger) feeding on decaying wood while being guarded by soldier termites (pointed heads). A typical colony contains nymphs (semi-mature young), workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals of both genders, sometimes containing several egg-laying queens. Photographed in Toachi Pilaton valley, Pichincha, Ecuador.
