Caption: Chalazion cyst eyelid surgery. Surgeon operating to remove a chalazion cyst from a patient's eyelid. A chalazion, or meibomian cyst, is caused by an obstruction to one of the meibomian glands which lubricate the edge of the eyelid. Chalazions are usually painless and often disappear without treatment. If the swelling is large, however, it can put pressure on the surface of the eye, blurring vision. In these cases it is surgically removed under local anaesthetic. Photographed in the ophthalmology department at the Fondation Rothschild, Paris, France.
