Caption: Apollo lunar module. Illustrations of cutaway view (top) and external view (bottom) of the Apollo Lunar Module ascent stage. The Lunar Module was used to land two astronauts on the surface of the Moon, and consisted of two sections. The descent stage allowed a powered landing on the lunar surface, and served as a launch pad for the ascent stage. The ascent stage, seen here, contained the crew cabin with flight controls, and propulsion systems for return of the craft to lunar orbit and rendezvous with the Apollo Command/Service Module.
