Caption: Cochlear implants. Man and woman, both fitted with cochlear hearing devices, discussing ideas at a meeting. The sound processor sits just behind the ear and the transmitter (round) sticks magnetically to the skull. It transmits sound as radio waves to internal receivers surgically implanted under the scalp. The sound is then transmitted, via wires, to electrodes implanted in the cochlea of the inner ear. The electrodes transmit the sound as electrical impulses to the auditory nerve, allowing the person to hear.
