Caption: Female genius, conceptual image. This artwork is based on 'Goethe in the Roman Campagna' (1787) by German painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751-1829). The original artwork featured German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), replaced here by a female figure. The relief in the background at lower right shows a scene from the classical tale Iphigenia in Tauris (by Ancient Greek playwright Euripides), which was retold by Goethe in 1779. The scene shows Iphigenia meeting her brother Orestes. The background of the painting depicts the Roman Campagna, the countryside around Rome with ancient ruins that was considered an essential part of the Grand Tour of Europe.
