Up to a million can be found in just one milliliter of seawater. Microbial ecology is a very young and growing field. The oceans form the majority of the earth, and bacteria form the majority of biomass in the oceans. Bacteria are part of a diverse ecology of marine micro-organisms that play a vital role in decomposing and recycling organic matter. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
