Caption: Electrokinetic potential analysis. Researcher analysing a colloidal sample to determine its electrokinetic (zeta) potential. A colloid is a mixture where one substance is dispersed evenly throughout another without being dissolved. The zeta potential is the potential difference between the stationary layer of fluid attached to each dispersed particle, and the medium in which it is dispersed. Colloids with high zeta potentials remain dispersed, while colloids with low zeta potentials tend to coagulate. Knowing the zeta potential of a colloidal system is particularly useful in pharmaceutics, when creating liquids to administer drugs such as multivitamin syrups.
