Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Trans-rectal ultrasound. Male patient lying on his back with his legs in stirrups (lithotomy position) and a trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) probe (right) inserted in his anus. Trans-rectal ultrasound uses ultrasound waves to create an image of organs in the pelvic region. They are most commonly used in the diagnosis, treatment, and biopsy of prostate cancers. Once in place, the middle of the probe can be removed leaving a tube through which camera or biopsy equipment can be inserted.
