Caption: Colon polyps, coloured contrast barium enema X-ray. This X-ray of the large intestine (colon) shows premalignant polyps (adenomas) due to familial polyposis coli. The normally smooth mucosa is covered in hundreds of thousands of premalignant polyps, giving a mottled appearance to the colon. This can be most clearly seen at lower right. They may cause intestinal bleeding and diarrhoea, and almost always turn cancerous later in life. Treatment of polyposis may require removal of all or part of the colon (colectomy).
