Caption: Extreme ultraviolet imaging telescope (EIT). This is an instrument on the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft that is used to obtain high-resolution ultraviolet images of the Sun's corona. SOHO's purpose is to study the Sun's surface and atmosphere and the solar wind in order to increase our understanding of solar phenomena. SOHO was launched in December 1995 and, although originally planned as a 2-year project, is still ongoing (as of 2008).
