Caption: Richardson's star catalogue. Published in 1835, this star catalogue was based on observations of 7385 stars made between 1822 and 1826 at the Paramatta Observatory in New South Wales, Australia. The Scottish astronomer William Richardson, working at Greenwich, London, UK, carried out the calculations to produce the catalogue. Such star catalogues, particularly those covering the southern hemisphere, were vital for navigation at sea, hence the funding and printing by the Admiralty.
