Caption: Iann Barron, electronics engineer, holding a transputer chip. Iann Barron is most famous as the inventor of the transputer chip and founder of the British semiconductor company Inmos Ltd. Transputers are high performance microprocessors that support parallel processing through on-chip hardware. They can be connected together and used as the building blocks for complex parallel processing systems. The transputer was ultimately a commercial failure but opened the way for further advancements in computer architecture. Photographed at the Inmos factory, Newport, Wales.
