Caption: Moon observation by British astronomer and mathematician Thomas Harriot (1560-1621). Harriot graduated from Oxford University and was hired by Sir Walter Raleigh as a mathematics tutor. Halley's Comet in 1607 turned his attention to astronomy and this observation of the Moon was made on 20th July 1610 (Julian calendar) at Syon House in London. Harriot made the first telescopic observations of the Moon on 26th July 1609 (C001/2222). His observations predate Galileo's study of the Moon by several months.
