Caption: Thomas Harriot archives at Petworth House. Archivist with drawings by British mathematician and astronomer Thomas Harriot (1560-1621). Harriot was first hired by Sir Walter Raleigh as a mathematics tutor. After an expedition to the Americas, he worked for Henry Percy, the 9th Earl of Northumberland. Harriot made the first telescopic observations of the Moon on 26th July 1609. His observations predate Galileo's study of the Moon by several months. Petworth House in West Sussex, UK, was Henry Percy's country estate and houses many of Thomas Harriot's drawings.
