Caption: Prehistoric cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), artwork. This bear lived in Europe during the Pleistocene epoch (1.8 million years ago to 10,000 years ago), but became extinct at the beginning of the last glacial maximum about 27,500 years ago. The cave bear was primarily herbivorous, but would resort to eating meat when plant foods were scarce.
