Caption: Nigella seed. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a Nigella seed. Nigella seed, also known as black onion seed and black cumin, comes from the Nigella sativa plant. The seeds resemble those of onions but it is actually a member of the buttercup family. The seeds are used for their strong bitter tasting flavour in sweets, alcoholic beverages and as whole seeds on bread. Magnification: x444 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
