Caption: Prostaglandin crystals. Polarised light micrograph (LM) of prostaglandin B1, a hormone-like chemical derived from arachidonic acid. There are more than 20 types of prostaglandins that are continually produced in mammal tissues. Their effects include lowering blood pressure, regulating cell function and affecting the platelet cells that form blood clots. They have localised effects because they are rapidly broken down once released by cells.
