Caption: Molecular computer modelling of the possible interaction between progesterone, the female sex hormone, with uteroglobulin, a uterine protein. The mechanism follows the "lock & key" principle. The key, progesterone (centre, with yellow molecular surface) fits into a "keyhole" receptor site in the surface of the uteroglobulin molecule, the surface of which is modelled in pink. Coloured stick forms represent uteroglobulin's atomic backbone. Uteroglobulin is a protein comprised of 140 amino acids. Its function is obscure; one possible action is in the transportation of progesterone between the uterus and embryo.
