Anastomosis is where two independent loops of the small intestine (here, the duodenum and the jejunum) are surgically connected (anastomosed). The procedure is performed when a diseased portion of intestine needs to be removed, or when it is necessary to bypass an obstruction or narrowing in the lumen. Here it was to bypass a stenotic lesion (obstruction) in the distal duodenum (the final part of the duodenum).
