Caption: Acetylcholine. Computer artwork of two molecules of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (chemical formula: C7.H17.NO3). Atoms are depicted as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (mauve), oxygen (red), hydrogen (white). Acetylcholine is an ester of choline occurring in various organs and tissues of the body. It plays an important role in the transmission of nerve impulses at nerve synapses and myoneural (muscle-nerve) junctions. It is quickly destroyed by an enzyme, cholinesterase. An imbalance of acetylcholine may result in neuromuscular shock. This molecule was discovered by Henry Dale and Otto Loewi.
