Caption: Radiation proctosigmoiditis of the colon. Proctosigmoiditis involves inflammation of the rectum and the sigmoid colon, and can be caused (as in this case) in response to radiation therapy for cancer of the genitourinary tract (cervix, uterus, prostate or testes). Symptoms include rectal bleeding, urgency (sudden need to defecate), and tenesmus (ineffective, painful need to defecate). Some patients also develop bloody diarrhoea and cramps.
