Caption: Peter Leopold Bender (born 1930), US astrophysicist. Bender's career involved work on astrophysical and geophysical precision measurements. From 1956 to 1995, he worked for the USA's National Bureau of Standards (later the National Institute of Standards and Technology). During the same period (from 1964) he worked at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics in Boulder, Colorado, USA. He has also served on many NASA committees. Projects he has been involved in include the Lunar Ranging Retroreflector Array left on the Moon by Apollo 11, LAGEOS (the Laser Geodynamics Satellite), and LISA (the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna).
