Caption: Ralph Decker Bennett (c.1900-1994), US physicist, photographed circa 1961. Bennett was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before World War II, and served as a naval officer during the war, establishing what later became the Naval Surface Warfare Center, White Oak, Maryland, USA. In 1954, Bennett became director of General Electric's Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory near Livermore, California, when it was the largest private laboratory of its kind. From 1961, he served as research director at the newly formed Martin Marietta Corporation. He retired in 1966.
