Caption: Joseph Michael Izen, US particle physicist. In the 1980s, Izen worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Projects he worked on included the Cleo, Tasso, Aleph, Mark III, SLD, SDC, and BES (Beijing Spectrometer) experiments. Since then has worked at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), on the BaBar experiment (1999-2006), analysing data from the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center). Izen's group at UTD is also responsible for the optoheater system of the ATLAS pixel detector, which is part of the apparatus used to study high-energy proton collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
