Caption: Howard Skipper (1915-2006), US oncologist, injecting a laboratory rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Skipper's investigation of the nature of cancer using laboratory mammals laid the foundation for modern chemotherapy. Scientists before him believed that, like bacteria, if most cancer cells were removed or destroyed then the immune system would kill off the rest. Skipper's work on leukaemia revealed that every cancer cell in the body must be killed in order to permanently cure the cancer.
