Caption: Stomach cancer. Endoscopic view of a malignant (cancerous) stomach ulcer (upper centre). Here the damaged epithelium of the ulcer has developed into stomach (gastric) cancer of the diffuse type. Diffuse type cancers are poorly differentiated, with no standard shape, and produce large amounts of mucous. The cancer is an adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer arising from glandular epithelial tissue. Stomach cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide. Several risk factors are thought to be involved including poor diet, smoking, and Helicobacter pylori (bacterial) infection.
