Broder was a developer of some of the first effective drugs for the treatment of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), including zidovudine, didanosine, and zalcitabine. He was also director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1989 to 1995. Photographed in 1986.
