Caption: Mallory-Weiss tear. Endoscopic view of the junction (cardia) between the oesophagus and stomach showing a Mallory-Weiss tear (upper centre). Mallory-Weiss tears can be caused by the force of severe wretching, coughing or vomiting. They are often associated with alcoholism and eating disorders, and may be noticed by episodes of vomiting up blood. The bleeding usually stops by itself after 24 to 48 hours, but endoscopic or surgical treatment is sometimes necessary.
