Caption: Sidney Farber (1903-1973), US paediatric pathologist, playing with a young patient. In 1947, Farber led a team of researchers who were the first in the world to attain temporary remissions of acute lymphocytic leukaemia, the most common cancer in children. He also founded the Children's Cancer Research Foundation (now Dana-Farber Cancer Center) in Boston, USA, in the late 1940s. Photographed in 1960.
