Caption: Toluquilla ash sample. This sample of ash is from the Cerro Toluquilla deposit, found in the Valsequillo Basin in Mexico. In 2003, a large collection of prehistoric footprints (animal and human) were discovered in this volcanic ash deposit. In 2005, the ash was dated to 40,000 years ago, challenging previously accepted theories about when the Americas were colonised.
