Caption: Blood flow through a capillary, animation. Blood delivers necessary substances - such as nutrients and oxygen - to the body's cells, and transports waste products away from the tissues. Oxygen in the lungs combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells (erythrocytes). The red blood cells circulate round the body and can be seen here passing through a capillary, the smallest of blood vessels which permeate the tissues. The red blood cells turn from red to blue to indicate their release of oxygen into the tissues for cellular respiration.
