Caption: Poliovirus. Animation showing the molecular structure of the protein coat of poliovirus, the agent responsible for poliomyelitis (polio), an infectious disease causing muscle weakness and paralysis. Poliovirus is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus. The protein coat consists of 12 pentagonal units. Each pentamer contains five copies of each of four different proteins. The coat of the virus is highly resistant to heat and acid, making the virus stable in such harsh environments as sewage systems and the human gut.
