Caption: Smoke detector physics, animation. Inside a smoke detector is an ionisation chamber with two plates and a source of ionising radiation. The alarm s battery creates a voltage across the plates. The radiation source emits alpha particles (red) at a constant rate, which ionise oxygen atoms (blue) in the air creating a small but constant current between the two plates. When smoke enters the chamber, it disrupts this ionisation and reduces the current between the plates, triggering the alarm.
