Caption: Gas chromatography (GC) procedure for separating mixtures of volatile compounds. The mixture is injected into the vaporiser port and heated. The sample is transported through the spiral tube (column) by the flow of an inert carrier gas, the mobile phase. Particles coating the inside surface of the column constitute the stationary phase, impeding the flow of different substances by different degrees. Components are identified by comparing their retention times (time taken to reach the detector) with those of known compounds. Quantitative analysis of the mixture is based on the size of the peaks recorded.
